5. TURNTABLE / CD recorded 1998-99, released 2000
Produced by Niels Kaiser (a.k.a. Ed Brettschneider;-) with Len Flöel at the Schmiede and Len’s Place, Freiburg
W.Y.C.A. and RELEASED WORLD produced by Roland Goerke
mastered by Eberhard Köhler at Powerplay mastering, Berlin
Now we were about to create something very special and unique.
And we had a record-contract/distribution now with a Berlin label, T3 records.
And for the first time total control in the ‘studio’ (which was in fact an old shack), because we produced the record by ourselves.
Before, we rushed in another local studio to do a punky version of Marilyn Monroe’s I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU for the Cannes Music Fair 1997, horribly mastered by some ‘specialist’ -and soon forgotten, though the original demo version was -and still is- fabulous.
As always, we hadn’t much money to realize our ideas, but now we learned from the experiences of the past years. We bought two digital 8-track machines and let it go. i remember i ‘ve had been working my ass off almost day and night for this album to get things right.
The result turned out to be our own masterpiece (as we felt then)- with the length of a double album. Much musical genres turn up on this: Classic Rock, Folk, Latin-Rhythms blend with electronic beats and ambient, then ‘Lo-Fi’-called sounds.
This CD received the best reviews we’ve ever had, like ‘this band is far superior to any other german band of its time…’ (a quote from Underground-Magazine PERSONA NON GRATA / Leipzig).
In fact, i think there are lots of Highlights on TURNTABLE: the repetitive ‘Krautrock’-Rhythm of SOMETHING TO SAY, the spaced-out sounds in SCOTTY and RAINMAKER, a spooky, slow-motion remake of KILLERBEES as well as the one of ACE OF SPADES, the legendary MOTÖRHEAD song. Experimental instrumentals like DRUMBOAT sat next to the classic Rock of the ironic I DON’T MIND and highly politically OVER…and last but not least the touching grande Finale of THE MIRRORBALL SONG.
Soon after the release we went on tour, mainly in Eastern Germany, to promote the Record. Again, almost nobody took notice of what we had achieved, except our local fan base, which was huge at that time.
This time the big mistake was going on a tour- in an area where nobody knows you.
