3. HELLCAT / Mini-CD 1996
Produced by Enrico Novi and Niels Kaiser at Le Vingt-Deux, F-Horbourg-Wihr
Now we had a band line-up for some time. We liked each other and had some similar taste in music- which helped to shape our sound a lot.
Recorded in Horbourg-Wihr/Alsace, HELLCAT was the first sucess of being ‘ourselves’ as a band in the studio and our Co-Producer Enrico Novi let us do exactly this.
In retrospect, HELLCAT is a fine little record with some great moments on it, bringing back warm memories of cameraderie and friendship. We were deeply into what was called ‘Alternative’, ‘Grunge’ or ‘Indie-Rock’ then- with NEIL YOUNG as a kind of our ‘Godfather’.
Although HELLCAT received some good reviews and the song KILLER BEES was regarded as a local hit, it still sounded a bit ‘low profile’. The critics went like: ‘nice work, guys, but it lacks some glamour. You’re too normal’.
It was in fact a ‘de-Luxe’-rehearsal room-recording- and still there are some moments: the crescendo of BROKEN TOY, the very YOUNG/CRAZY-HORSE-influenced MICHAEL, the dizzy instrumental break on (title-song) HELLCAT and of course the short mantra in the end, WON’T YOU COME ACROSS, which became a sing-along favourite by our growing audience. And you could hear WONDERS in a rough but unnecessary 3rd version again;-)
At the Europop-Music Fair ’96 in Freiburg we got in contact with Thomas Franke from Berlin, who decided to sign us to his new-founded Label T3 Records after hearing HELLCAT.
Things were looking good…
