4. MAD MACHINE / IN MOTION Studio Demo / Vielklang Studio Berlin 1997

Once again we got the chance to work in a Berlin Studio, this time with a ‘young and hip producer’. The idea was to do a follow-up to KILLER BEES.
It was a confused time when our self-confidence we gained with HELLCAT was on a low ebb again. These days a lot of people listened to major acts like GARBAGE, BECK, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, PORTISHEAD… Lots of massive production skills we couldn’t compare with.
In comparison, we sounded like second choice, the (provincial) ‘Last year’s model’.

The lyrics of MAD MACHINE were probably the most scary and misunderstood- a deep and dark reflection of pure evil, an unconcious forecast of all atrocities going on in this world (which are nowadays widely exposed through the web).
So we agreed in making a hard-edged production with a weird, distorted, almost desperate attitude- far from our warm and organic ‘vintage’-concept of sound we started with. Again, our producer had his own ideas. We decided to compromise, like ‘ok, let’s do a keyboard-riff instead of a guitar solo’ (the result sounded quite awkward- though it showed a new way of doing things).
In retrospect, this was in a way a blueprint for that what followed- our most acclaimed (and a lot more versatile) achievement we’ve ever done.
